Tottenham Hotspur head to Carrow Road to meet already-relegated Norwich City in their final game of the 2021/22 Premier League season.

Spurs’ season-defining decision to sack underachieving boss Nuno Espirito Santo and appoint Antonio Conte back in November has turned their fortunes around.

The north London giants, who looked clueless and on course to settle for a mid-table finish, are now one step away from returning to the Champions League for the first time since 2019/20.

Conte’s men need to stay unbeaten against the division’s worst-performing side to pip fifth-placed Arsenal to a fourth-place finish regardless of the Gunners’ result against Everton.

But much of the credit for Tottenham having their Champions League destiny firmly within their grasp has to go to Arsenal, whose disheartening 2-0 defeat at Newcastle United brought Spurs back into the driver’s seat.

Tottenham will be out at Carrow Road to seize the opportunity, and there is a feeling that Dean Smith’s strugglers could be powerless to prevent Spurs’ return to Europe’s most prestigious club competition next season.

Inspired by a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Burnley last time out, Conte’s team will be looking to give the out-of-sorts Canaries a parting gift to remember.

In the pre-match conference, Smith admitted that Norwich are only interested in winning their sign-out Premier League fixture regardless of the implacations this encounter has on the top-four run-in.

“I have had texts off Arsenal fans and I have had texts off Tottenham fans, but I have no allegiance to either so there is no extra motivation at all,” he said, as relayed by The Independent.

“That (top four battle) doesn’t affect us at all. It is a game of football. It is our last home game of the season and last Premier League game of the season.

“We will try and win the football game because we want to get the points, but there is no extra motivation.”

Match Preview

Norwich City

Despite confirming their status as the ‘yo-yo’ club, the Canaries could still leapfrog Watford to 19th and potentially earn some extra £5-10million in prize money ahead of their impending return to the Championship.

However, Norwich will take the field in the midst of a rotten form, though a 1-1 draw away to Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out helped them arrest a four-game losing league streak.

Still, Norwich’s embarrassing home form remains a problem.

Except for a 2-0 victory over relegation-battling Burnley, Smith’s men have lost four of their last five Premier League fixtures at Carrow Road by multi-goal margins, conceding 3+ goals on each occasion.

Tottenham Hotspur

After racking up back-to-back league wins outside London, Spurs have drawn their last two Premier League matches away from home, including a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on their most recent travel.

Tottenham will feel confident about extending their four-game unbeaten league run on the road as they go up against a side they have lost to just once in their last ten away league H2Hs (W6, D3).

It is also worth noting that the Londoners have lost their final league match in just one of the last 11 seasons (W8, D2), courtesy of a 5-1 thumping at already-relegated Newcastle in 2015/16.

Team News

Norwich will enter the final round severely weakened by injuries, as Andrew Omobamidele, Adam Idah, Kenny McLean, Joshua Sargent, Ozan Kabak and Christoph Zimmermann are all unavailable for selection.

As for Tottenham, Japhet Tanganga, Oliver Skipp, Sergio Reguilon and Matt Doherty are all still recovering from injuries and will watch the game from the stands.

Norwich City Potential Starting XI

(4-3-3): Angus Gunn; Max Aarons, Sam Byram, Grant Hanley, Dimitris Giannoulis; Rupp, Mathias Normann, Pierre Lees-Melou; Kieran Dowell, Teemu Pukki, Milot Rashica.

Tottenham Hotspur Potential Starting XI

(3-4-3): Hugo Lloris; Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier, Ben Davies; Emerson, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon; Dejan Kulusevski, Harry Kane, Son Heung-min.
