Norwich City’s Christos Tzolis is on the radar of Union Berlin and Werder Bremen after his impressive form on loan with Düsseldorf this season.
The Greek international came through the ranks at PAOK, and his fine form in the 2020/21 campaign put the winger on the radar of clubs across Europe.
And, it was Norwich who won the race to sign Tzolis, who linked up with the Canaries when they were a Premier League club.
However, his time at Carrow Road didn’t go to plan, as the 22-year-old struggled to establish himself as a regular as the side were relegated from the Premier League.
A temporary switch to FC Twente was agreed for the following season, but Tzolis returned to Norwich in January after a difficult time in the Eredivisie. He would eventually go on to make 13 appearances for the Yellows in the Championship, with Tzolis managing just one goal.
Therefore, another loan move was sorted, and Tzolis has shone in the German second division with Düsseldorf this season, scoring 15 goals and registering six assists in 23 games as they push for promotion.
As part of the agreement that was reached in the summer, Düsseldorf have the option to buy Tzolis permanently for around €5m this summer.
Yet, reports from Germany have revealed that finding that money could be difficult for the club, which is opening up the possibility for other clubs to swoop in and sign Tzolis.
Sport Bild has stated that both Union Berlin and Werder Bremen are keeping tabs on the player, and they could be ready to make a move when the window opens later this year.
With both sure to be in the Bundesliga again next season, such a fee wouldn’t be problematic.
But, it should be noted that, unlike Düsseldorf, neither side has an agreement in place with Norwich, and this isn’t a release clause for Tzolis, so they would need to negotiate with Norwich.
With that in mind, the Canaries will surely hope that Tzolis’ performances this year have driven up his price.
Obviously, Norwich’s summer plans are going to depend on what division they’re in, and they will feel that promotion is a real possibility given their brilliant 2024 so far.
In terms of Tzolis, some will argue that he should be given another chance at Carrow Road, and you can understand that view. He is still a young player, and there’s no doubt he has improved considerably at Düsseldorf.
If Norwich are a Championship side, the idea of keeping him around would make more sense, but the reality is that the player may push for a move.
It’s clear he struggled in England, and he may feel that he is more suited to German football, whilst the prospect of linking up with either Werder Bremen or Union Berlin in the top-flight is going to appeal.
So, this is an interesting one to monitor, and it seems Tzolis could have a big decision to make on his future, although his only focus right now will be winning promotion with Düsseldorf.
