Norwich City boss David Wagner has taken full responsibility for Tim Krul’s error at the weekend that led to Burnley’s opener at Carrow Road, speaking to Pinkun after the game.

The Dutchman had decided to try and play the ball short from a goal kick – but he passed the ball straight to Anass Zaroury who took full advantage and put the Clarets 1-0 up in Norfolk in the eighth minute – giving the hosts a mountain to climb in their quest to win three points.

Unfortunately, Wagner’s side were unable to respond, going in at half-time 1-0 down and conceding again in the second 45 with Vitinho and Hjalmar Ekdal scoring to secure a 3-0 victory for the league leaders.

Real Fake

With several key players unavailable for Vincent Kompany’s side including Arijanet Muric, Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Manuel Benson and Jay Rodriguez, the Canaries would have seen this game as a good opportunity to make a real statement to the rest of the division.

Winning their previous two league games coming into this clash, they wouldn’t have been short of confidence but their defeat has consigned them to 10th place at this point, something that will disappoint Wagner following some confidence-boosting victories.

He had no issues taking responsibility for the Clarets’ eighth-minute breakthrough though despite the goalkeeper being at fault.

He said: “I raised my hand for this mistake, no problem with it.

“We like to play football out of the back if it’s on. In this situation, it wasn’t, so it was more about the decision rather than does he has the capability of passing the ball.”

The Verdict:

That’s leadership for you – and you feel these comments will help Krul to overcome that mistake because he will know just as well as anyone else how costly it was.

With that error coming early on in the game, it helped to provide the Clarets with an early confidence boost and that’s the last thing Norwich needed considering Kompany’s side didn’t need any encouragement anyway.

With the home crowd behind them, Norwich would have seen this as an opportunity to put the Lancashire side on the back foot from the first minute and make the game a very uncomfortable one for the visitors.

In fairness, it’s not as if the two teams are direct rivals at this stage because Kompany’s side look set to seal automatic promotion, whilst the Canaries will be hoping to force their way into the top six.

But that doesn’t make the defeat any less painful – and they will be desperate to respond well when they travel to Bristol City this weekend. Nigel Pearson’s side are in decent form, so this won’t be an easy task.
