While Chelsea fans are already getting excited by signings being agreed for this summer, there is also a huge amount of hype about a player who has been on our books for a few years without getting a competitive minute.
Andrey Santos’ superb 18 months at Strasbourg has totally turned his career around. A dodgy 6 months at Nottingham Forest where he never played was a scary moment, but already looks like a blip. All the assumptions have been that he will become part of the first team squad next season – but that’s not certain.
Remember, we all thought that a year ago too, and instead he returned to Ligue 1 for another year. That’s been great for his development, but left us short in midfield this year. With Romeo Lavia out for long stretches, Santos would have played plenty for us this year.
The Brazilian’s comments today, as picked up by Edu Burgos of Spanish paper AS, certainly reinforce the idea that it’s not a done deal.
“I don’t believe there’s been anything concrete [decided]. Nobody’s come to speak to me directly. It’s in the hands of the club and the hands of my agents,” Santos is quoted as saying.
“When the season ends, we’ll see what happens, we will take the best decision for both parties.”
While letting him go on loan this season was a mistake, it was an understandable one. To make the same mistake this time would be unforgivable. He’s big, physical, has an eye for goal, plenty of quality on the ball and is proving to be a real leader.
What more do we want from a midfield player? The rumours about selling him simply must be false, even these sporting directors wouldn’t make a mistake that obvious.
