The Premier League Big Six did everything they could to prevent the Newcastle United takeover.

Anybody would think they were scared of their cosy cartel finally having a little bit of competition…

Unable to stop the takeover, the Premier League Big Six have then continued off the pitch to do all they can to try and stop Newcastle United, or at the very least, slow NUFC down.

What about on the pitch though?

How has this worked out for the Premier League Big Six against Newcastle United?

Or of more interest to ourselves as fans, how are Eddie Howe’s NUFC side getting on against the Premier League Big Six?

After all, if Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are to really compete, in the Premier League and in…cup competitions, these are the games that in reality you have to start winning on a regular basis.

Chelsea are the final one of the Premier League Big Six to visit Tyneside this season, so I have concentrated this time on results under Eddie Howe at St James’ Park, against the half dozen usual suspects…

2021/22 season – Eddie Howe Newcastle United team v Premier League Big Six at St James’ Park:

Newcastle 0 Man City 4

Newcastle 1 Man Utd 1

Newcastle 0 Liverpool 1

Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0

Played 4 Won 1 Drawn 1 Lost 2

The 2021/22 season under Eddie Howe, won 25% of matches against the Premier League Big Six at SJP and lost 50% of them.

2022/23 season – Eddie Howe Newcastle United team v Premier League Big Six at SJP:

Newcastle 3 Man City 3

Newcastle 1 Chelsea 0

Newcastle 0 Liverpool 2

Newcastle 2 Man U 0

Newcastle 6 Tottenham 1

Newcastle 0 Arsenal 2

Played 6 Won 3 Drawn 1 Lost 2

The 2022/23 season under Eddie Howe, won 50% of matches against the Premier League Big Six at SJP and lost 33% of them.

2023/24 season – Eddie Howe Newcastle United team v Premier League Big Six at SJP:

Newcastle 1 Liverpool 2

Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0

Newcastle 4 Chelsea 1

Newcastle 1 Man U 0

Newcastle 2 Man City 3

Newcastle 4 Tottenham 0

Newcastle 1 Man City 0 (League Cup)

Played 7 Won 5 Drawn 0 Lost 2

The 2023/24 season under Eddie Howe, won 71% of matches against the Premier League Big Six and lost 29% of them.

2024/25 season – Eddie Howe Newcastle United team v Premier League Big Six at SJP so far:

Newcastle 2 Tottenham 1

Newcastle 1 Man City 1

Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0

Newcastle 3 Liverpool 3

Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0 (League Cup)

Newcastle 2 Arsenal 0 (League Cup)

Played 7 Won 5 Drawn 2 Lost 0

The 2024/25 season so far under Eddie Howe, won 71% of matches against the Premier League Big Six at SJP and lost 0% of them.

This season so far, the signs are VERY promising against the Premier League Big Six.

Taking all those stats above, this is the overall picture so far under Eddie Howe, when facing the Premier League Big Six at St James’ Park:

Played 24 Won 14 Drawn 4 Lost 6

All of the Premier League Big Six have massive financial advantages over Newcastle United as things still currently stand.

After a decade and a half of Mike Ashley, Newcastle United were miles behind all half dozen of them, on and off the pitch. Since the October 2021 takeover, all of the six have spent considerably more on new signings than NUFC, in certain cases far more, in some cases FAR FAR more. Such as…Chelsea!

All of these clubs also have far higher wage bills than Newcastle United when it comes to paying players.

Eddie Howe is performing miracles, winning any match against a Premier League Big Six side is a victory very much against the odds.

Only Eddie Howe’s brilliance in the transfer market and his work (assisted by Jason Tindall and others) with the players (both inherited players and those bought the past three and a half years) has allowed Newcastle United now not just to compete, but to also beat these Premier League Big Six clubs on a regular basis at St James’ Park (and increasingly away from home).

Just imagine what Eddie Howe could be capable of if it was a level playing field, if Newcastle United were allowed to compete in terms of money, allowed to pay those wages and spend the levels of cash in the transfer market that these half dozen do?

We will get there in the end, just a question of time under Eddie Howe and this NUFC ownership.

No wonder the Premier League Big Six are so afraid of Newcastle United.

Finally, these are the St James’ Park records under Eddie Howe against each individual club in the Premier League Big Six:

Arsenal

Played 5 Won 4 Drawn 0 Lost 1

Chelsea

Played 3 Won 3 Drawn 0 Lost 0

Liverpool

Played 4 Won 0 Drawn 1 Lost 3

Man City

Played 5 Won 1 Drawn 2 Lost 2

Man U

Played 4 Won 3 Drawn 1 Lost 0

Spurs

Played 3 Won 3 Drawn 0 Lost 0

During the Eddie Howe NUFC era, if you take out the results at St James’ Park against the top two clubs (Man City and Liverpool) of these recent times, you are then left with a record at SJP against the other four of the Premier League Big Six that shows Played 15 Won 13 Drawn 1 Lost 1.

That of course includes three games against Chelsea where United have won all three at SJP, scoring seven goals and conceding just one.

Sunday is of course a tough match BUT history under Eddie Howe shows it is a game that Newcastle United could and should win.
