Manchester United wingback Diogo Dalot confirms the new mentality conveyed by new head coach Ruben Amorim which saw two of his teammates astonishingly dropped from the squad for the big Derby.
The Portuguese tactician stole the headlines before kickoff by omitting Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho from the matchday squad for Sunday’s major showdown against Manchester City.
Although this deprived the Red Devils of two key attacking options, Amorim won the bet thanks to Amad Diallo’s late heroics. The Ivorian inspired a late comeback that left the Cityzens stunned as the visitors took all three points.
The former Sporting CP manager insisted this wasn’t a disciplinary measure on his part, but simply a technical one. He added that the doors remain open for the duo to return to the squad, but must catch up with their teammates in training.
For his part, Dalot shed some light on the situation, explaining how his compatriot is demanding hard work in the training field and during the match.
“The message was clear from the beginning: if you want to succeed and if you want to thrive, then you have to suffer. That’s not just in football but in life,” said the 25-year-old in his post-match chat with journalists in the mixed zone (via Manchester Evening News).
“You have to work hard. If you want to succeed at this club, you have to suffer and if you’re ready to do that with us, we’re going to be a good team. If you’re not, there’s no space for you.”

Dalot was also happy to see the team maintain composure and control their emotions under pressure, which hasn’t always been the case in previous years.
“The last couple of years we had some crazy games like this, fighting until the end and I think that’s the DNA of this club. Today we showed character and even when we were losing the game, I think our emotions were kept in control, which I think is progress.
“I think when we were trailing we could have lost our heads a little bit and stopped being controlled emotionally. We showed a lot of character and I really like the way we reacted, even after the first goal.
“You could feel the energy coming inside between us and it was really good. And credit to the players who came on because I think they gave us the energy so really happy with the afternoon.”
