HLN are reporting that Islam Slimani will not be returning to Anderlecht. The all time record scorer for Algeria became a fan favourite during his time at the back end of the 2022/2023 season. There had been talks between the striker and Anderlecht about a return, but after an agreement could not be reached they have decided to end cooperation.
The 35-year-old was a surprise deadline day signing by the club, with many questioning what the veteran forward could bring. He proved everyone wrong, with nine goals in 16 games across the Belgian Pro League and Conference League. This came after he managed to score just once in 16 Ligue 1 games for Brest.
Slimani has eyes on a final AFCON appearance in the upcoming tournament in the Cote d’Ivoire. With 42 goals in 89 appearances, he is the Fenenc Foxes current all-time top scorer.
Anderlecht will now be looking elsewhere for a new striker to fill the void left by Slimani. At the opposite end of the pitch, the side have been linked with Viborg defender Nicolas Bürgy.
