It was nothing short of a watching brief for goalkeeper Yann Sommer in Inter Milan’s one-sided Serie A win over Salernitana.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, take the rare step of not awarding the Swiss a player rating for his performance in the match.

Clean sheets have become a habit for Sommer in Serie A.

Yesterday’s was the Swiss international’s fifteenth since joining Inter from Bayern Munich last summer.

And Sommer can take his share of the credit for many of them. The 35-year-old has made some vital saves over the course of the season.

But yesterday’s clean sheet was one in which the former Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbach veteran simply couldn’t take any of the credit.

Watching Brief For Yann Sommer In Inter Rout Of Salernitana

It has sometimes been the case this season that Sommer has received relatively middling grades in matches where the opposition simply have not tested him.

After all, it is hard to judge a player who has little to do.

The Swiss has had some man-of-the-match worthy performances in an Inter shirt.

But at the same time, sometimes he ends up receiving a 6/10 score or thereabouts. Simply because he’ll go an entire match having only a couple routine saves to make.

And the Gazzetta contend that yesterday’s match goes even beyond that.

Salernitana had a total of one shot during the entire match. And it gave Sommer absolutely nothing to think about.

There were no corners into the Inter box for the keeper to think about.

Nor did the Granata swing any dangerous crosses into the box. Or force the Inter to come out and close off an angle for a striker.

It was a match where Sommer was a “literal spectator.”

So the Gazzetta make a statement by simply giving the 35-year-old a “N/A” grade in the player ratings for the match.
