Borussia Dortmund's U23s were beaten 3-0 by SG Dynamo Dresden in their third-division clash. BVB held their own for a long time in the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion, but in the end lost heavily in front of 20,731 spectators, partly due to a yellow-red card against Mario Suver.

Personnel: Coach Christian Preusser selected a slightly different team compared with the team that lost to Freiburg U23s. Mario Suver started in the three-man backline and Prince Aning started on the left side of midfield. They replaced Göktan Gürpüz and Guille Bueno, who were on the bench. Christian Preusser also made tactical changes: Antonios Papadopoulos moved into defensive midfield alongside Franz Pfanne, and Abdoulaye Kamara moved up into an attacking midfield position.

The scenario: The Black & Yellows went into the matchday 7 game against Dynamo Dresden with four points. The hosts (relegated from the second division last season) were in tenth place with nine points from six games. Dresden won their last match 1-0 away to Erzgebirge Aue. Curious: Due to having identical jersey colours, BVB had to play in their red goalkeeper strip.

The match: In front of more than 500 BVB fans, both teams got a feel for each other in the opening minutes — strong challenges in midfield dominated the start of the match. So it came as something of a surprise when the hosts took a 1-0 lead after nine minutes. Following the first corner kick of the match, the ball was flicked on by Stefan Kutschke and Kevin Ehlers converted to give Dynamo an early lead.

The goal gave Dresden confidence and coach Markus Anfang's team stayed compact in their own half. Borussia needed a while before making an impact in attacking areas. Attempts from Marco Pasalic and Justin Njinmah resulted in corner kicks. At the other end of the field, BVB's defence was stable and offered few openings.

After 33 minutes, Prince Aning tested ex-Borussia keeper Stefan Drljaca for the first time in the Dynamo goal. Eleven minutes later, the eye-catching Njinmah missed the biggest chance for the Black & Yellows. After a long ball, he got himself in a strong position, but was not precise enough in his finish. His shot flew past the SGD goal and BVB went into half-time with a narrow deficit.

After the break, it was Njinmah again who missed a double chance. The lively winger scored what he thought was the equaliser in the 56th minute, but referee Tobias Schultes disallowed the goal due to a previous offside position. Dynamo produced frequent counter-attacks in the second half, but BVB goalkeeper Luca Unbehaun was initially not put under any great pressure.

After 63 minutes, BVB centre-back Mario Suver was forced into a foul to stop another rapid attack by the hosts. The Borussia defender, who had already been cautioned, was shown the red card and had to take an early shower. And as if that was not punishment enough, the subsequent free-kick delivered the next blow for BVB: the ball struck Prince Aning's outstretched hand and referee Schultes pointed to the spot — penalty for the home side. Ahmet Arslan grabbed the ball and converted to the annoyance of all Borussen and the job was nearly done for Dynamo Dresden.

Playing with a man short, Borussia found it difficult to create anything in attack. Dresden took the game safely over the line and even went 3-0 up in the 89th minute. Claudio Kammerknecht stood in just the right place after a corner kick and headed home from inside the five-metre box to make it 3-0. This was the third goal BVB had conceded after a set piece this afternoon.

Christian Preusser: "First of all, I'd like to thank our fans for their support. It really is exceptional and will help to carry us through the season. Our situation isn't easy, you can see that by looking at the table. I think the margin of victory today was too high. We weren't brave enough in the first half. We played too many square balls and didn't really get into scoring positions. We paid the price today for our inability to deal with set pieces. And in the second half it was difficult of course with only ten men, but I though we didn't do a bad job. But the bottom line is we lost and we have to deal with that."

BVB U23s: Unbehaun — Suver, Dams, Coulibaly — Pasalic (replaced by Özkan, 66th minute), Pfanne, Papadopoulos, Aning (Finnsson, 77) — Kamara (Gürpüz, 66) — Eberwein (Tattermusch, 88), Njinmah (Braaf, 77)

Goals: 1-0 Ehlers (9), 2-0 Arslan (66), 3-0 Kammerknecht (89)

Next up: On Saturday, VfB Oldenburg will be the visitors to the SIGNAL IDUNA PARK. Kick-off is at 14.00 CET for this match in the 3. Liga.
