No one noticed Rangers’ big secret in 4-0 drubbing

No one noticed this, but Saturday’s win at Tynecastle featured the most summer signings in one match since the window closed.

Ben Davies, Rabbi Matondo and Antonio Colak all started while Tillman appeared as a second half substitute, and where their performances were varying, is there any coincidence Rangers’ shape and overall performance was the best this season?

Rangers signed these players in the summer, and while John Souttar appears already to be a busted flush, Tom Lawrence has already impressed, where Turk Ridvan will take a little longer.

But the fact that the summer work may just tentatively be beginning to bear fruit is very significant indeed.

The big difference on Saturday, for us, was the presence of Matondo – while his individual outlay wasn’t vintage, the balance he gave on the right side allowed the shape in general to work extremely well.

In recent times, it’s been Wright, or Arfield, or Tillman – any number of ill-fitting players who don’t suit that position.

But a right-footed right winger out wide gave the shape the right equilibrium and Rangers looked much, much more dangerous for it, with a superior transition between midfield and attack and more dangerous forages into the opposition box.

There’s no coincidence Kent had his best afternoon of the season, even if many fans want to slaughter him anyway, with a stunning assist and even better goal – he needs to impact more but overall, this was the best he’s done in a long time.

And that shape, using so many summer signings and making some badly-needed changes, made such a difference.

McGregor certainly helped a bit too, as it happens, but finally, we may be seeing the summer work bear some fruit at long last.

We’re an impatient bunch all right.
