Jorginho has had a superb season, to the extent that there are people talking about him as a potential Ballon d’Or candidate.

That seemed a long way off even 9 months ago, which tells you just how impressive his rise was since then.

He’s ended the season with a Champions League trophy with Chelsea, and a European Championship with Italy. As the midfielder said, there’s nobody who with a bigger haul this year:

“I’ll be honest enough: it depends on the criteria that lead to assigning [the Ballon d’Or],” Jorginho explained in quotes picked up by Football Italia.

“If we walk about talent, I’m aware that I’m not the best in the world. If you choose based on titles, well, no one has won more than me this season.

“How will I compare myself to [Lionel] Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo or Neymar? They have completely different characteristics, but again, it depends on the criteria.”

We’d love to see a Blue win the top individual trophy in football, although it won’t be east. Messi’s victory in the Copa America means he’s once again a front runner for the trophy, while there’s competition from Jorginho’s own teammate N’Golo Kante, who had a brilliant run to the European Cup final but was let down by France’s efforts in the Euros.

There are still many months left until the decision, and a strong start to the season for either could swing it in their favour.

Let’s wait and see what happens come September…
