Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has almost laughed off a suggestion comparing two of Arsenal’s players to two Chelsea legends, and he explains why.
The former Blues player and manager was on our TV screens earlier this week covering Arsenal in the Champions League.
Of course, Mikel Arteta’s side are doing very well in the last couple of seasons, and Chelsea fans have just had to watch on from afar.
But they haven’t yet achieved anything, and Lampard was quick to point that out this week when faced with a question about two of their defenders.
John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho were incredible
Arteta’s side is in excellent form, and defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães have been a big part of that success.
But can they be compared to Chelsea’s legendary duo of Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry at Chelsea?
Frank Lampard was asked if Saliba and Gabriel could be compared to the two, and he said, as quoted by The Sun:
“No! Not yet. If they go and win two, three Premier Leagues and a Champions League, maybe you can compare them.
“I’m not putting them down. They are young, fantastic players improving all the time.”
Lampard is absolutely right. You can’t just start throwing around comparisons like this at this time. Success needs to be sustained over a period of time and plenty of trophies need to come as a result, that’s what Terry and Carvalho did at Chelsea, especially Terry.
Maybe some Arsenal players can get there eventually, but it’s far too early right now.
