Mbappé spares France’s blushes

Scorers: Weimann 36′; Mbappé 83′

Austria goalkeeper Patrick Pentz was the hero of the evening, as a series of superb saves held France to a 1-1 draw.

The night started with what looked to be a certain goal from Karim Benzema as he fired in a rebounded shot from six yards out, but somehow Pentz showed cat-like reflexes to save the effort from crossing the line.

France had several chances to open the scoring, but it was Austria who took the lead through Bristol City’s Andreas Weimann with his first ever international goal, a simple tap-in.

France were still trailing with just over an hour gone, so it was time for boss Didier Deschamps to introduce Kylian Mbappé.

The PSG man inevitably levelled the scores 20 minutes later, with an absolutely sublime finish into the roof of the net after he had latched on to an inch-perfect pass from Christopher Nkunku.

Mbappé now has five goal contributions in the last five games coming off the bench for France (three goals, two assists) but surely France won’t be happy with the result.

Denmark fail to make early chances count

Scorers: Pašalić 69′

This really was a game of two halves, but Croatia made their dominance in the second period count, as they took a narrow 1-0 win.

The first half ended goalless, although Denmark had the lion’s share of the chances with eight shots on goal to Croatia’s one.

Boss Zlatko Dalić changed things up at half-time, as he brought on Luka Modrić and Mateo Kovačić ready for the restart of play, and it was indeed Croatia who opened the scoring on 69 minutes with a tap-in from Mario Pašalić.

There was some late drama as Denmark’s Andreas Skov Olsen latched onto a flick-on and found the back of the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
