Madonna. Prince. Bono. Rihanna.
Those are just some of the many celebrities who have become known by one name and one name only.
And when Frenkie de Jong joins Barcelona next summer, he too could be adding his name to that esteemed list.
In an interview with Dutch outlet Het Kontakt this week, De Jong revealed that Barça’s kit manufacturer Nike would like the midfielder to have ‘Frenkie’ on the back of his shirt rather than his surname.
“In July I will sign my official contract with Barcelona and will be presented,” said the 21-year-old.
“I would like to wear number 21, which is my number. Nike prefer that I use ‘Frenkie’ on the shirt, which is better from a marketing point of view, although I’m not sure what we’ll do.”
De Jong also confirmed that he and his girlfriend will soon begin taking Spanish classes in order to prepare for life at his new club.
And the Ajax starlet revealed that he hopes to emulate Lionel Messi by spending the rest of his career at Camp Nou.
“Paris Saint-Germain was a good option, but Barcelona has always been a dream,” he added.
“I am happy with my five-year contract, and if I succeed, the chances are that I will never leave, just like [Lionel] Messi.”
