Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson called for officials to explain their decisions in public after he felt key calls went against his side in the 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.

The Robins’ frustrating start to the campaign continued against the Latics, as they failed to hold on for the win after Andi Weimann opened the scoring, although they did at least get off the mark with their first point.

However, there was an annoyance that they weren’t playing against ten men after Joe Bennett appeared to kick out at Joe Williams in the first half but he was only shown a yellow.

And, speaking to Bristol Live, Pearson gave his thoughts on the incident.

Apparently, and I’ll wait until I see the report, apparently what the officials said it was for petulance rather than aggression so make of that what you will. I don’t really understand that. But we’ll see what happens.

I can’t justify their decisions. And this is why it’s important for everyone and referees themselves that there’s greater transparency and accountability.”

The verdict

You can understand why Pearson is annoyed at this decision, and the fact Bennett was withdrawn at half-time suggests Wigan might feel he got away with one as well.

It’s been a tough start to the season for Bristol City on that front but they also can’t use it as an excuse, as they should still be doing more to get the win themselves.

There were some positives to take from yesterday, notably that they got the point, and they will now try to get the first victory when they take on Luton in the week.
