Charlton Athletic manager Nigel Adkins has revealed that the Addicks have held fresh talks with both Chuks Aneke and Ben Amos over their futures in the last few days as they face a major decision on their futures.

Aneke is a player that has been attracting plenty of transfer interest this summer as his current deal with Charlton is set to expire.

The Addicks are keen to keep hold of him, but it has been reported that the likes of QPR, Bristol City, Middlesbrough and Reading are amongst the sides that might be wanting to sign him on a free transfer.

Amos, meanwhile, is also someone that is set to leave Charlton imminently unless he signs a new deal with the club.

It is being reported that League One rivals Ipswich Town are interested in making a move to sign the keeper as they eye up potential options to improve their options between the sticks.

Speaking to London News Online, Adkins revealed that Charlton have held fresh talks with Aneke and Amos in an attempt to convince them to remain at the Valley. However, he conceded that it is now up to the players to make a final deicion on their futures.

He said: “We’ll have to wait and see. For example, I spoke to Ben and Chuks yesterday. They know I want them at the football club. The players have to make a decision and the agents make a decision for the finances as well. It is the way it is, let’s not hide about it.

“There are many factors now in a player deciding where they want to be. Agents have a big say in it but ultimately the player has got to be happy where they are playing.

The verdict

This update suggests that Charlton have maybe now had their final attempt at persuading both Amos and Aneke to commit their futures to the club and sign a new deal rather than look to move on elsewhere during the transfer window. Adkins has clearly been working hard on trying to get the pair to stay, so it would be a huge blow if they were to leave the club.

The fact that their futures have been in doubt for so long means that Charlton will have had plenty of time to assess potential alternative signings they could make to replace them with. That should be a major positive for them and means that you would be expecting them to make moves for replacements swiftly if they were to depart the Valley.

They would both be very difficult to replace in the current transfer market and Charlton would have to work hard to do that. However, neither player is irreplaceable and the Addicks should be able to ensure that even if they do leave they have enough quality in their squad.
