Nico Gonzalez: Last man standing in Serie A transfer chain

Nico Gonzalez is the last domino to fall in a complicated Serie A transfer merry-go-round that has seen Andrea Pinamonti join Genoa, Mateo Retegui join Atalanta and Albert Gudmundsson signing for Fiorentina.

All paths clear for Nico Gonzalez to Juventus

Juventus have agreed a fee with Fiorentina to sign recent Copa America winner Nico Gonzalez, at a reported cost of €30m. Though the two clubs had shook hands over the deal, Fiorentina were reluctant to release the player until they had found a suitable replacement themselves.

That replacement was always going to be Gudmundsson, who has now officially joined Raffaele Palladino’s side on loan with a probable option to buy at a total cost of €28.5m.

There was a slight delay in Gudmundsson joining Fiorentina, though, as his former club Genoa wanted to find a replacement before selling, too.

The Grifone’s need for a new striker was even more pressing, given that they had also sold Italy international Mateo Retegui to Atalanta just over a week ago.

Fortunately, Genoa were able to strike a deal with recently-relegated Sassuolo for former Inter striker Andrea Pinamonti, who joins on loan with an option to buy at a total cost of €16m.

All of these transfers means that Nico Gonzalez’s move to Juventus is now all but an official announcement away. He still needs to complete a medical test with the Old Lady, but no issues are expected to arise there.

Even more encouraging for Juve is the fact that Palladino has left Nico out of the travelling squad for Saturday’s Serie A season opener against Parma.
