Charlie Nicholas has contrasted Steven Gerrard’s decision to exit theRangers with Ange Postecoglou’s Leicester links and decision not to go there or indeed to Brighton.

The former Celtic striker believes that Gerrard made a huge mistake in leaving his job at Ibrox in favour of the move to manage Aston Villa. In contrast, Ange Postecoglou has shrugged off claims that he might opt to leave Paradise, and instead is set to remain at Celtic for the foreseeable future.

Nichola, who  knows a thing or two about walking out on Celtic, believes Ange hasn’t made the same mistake as Gerrard (or indeed himself) and can see the bigger picture in his managing career. Nicholas doesn’t believe Ange will remain in Paradise forever however but believes when he moves, it won’t be down south, but potentially somewhere else in Europe.

Writing in his Scottish Daily Express column, Nicholas outlined his opinion on the matter.

“Ange Postecoglou won’t be interested in the Leicester City job if it becomes available – but I think in the fullness of time he will leave Celtic and it will be to a European club.  The lure of the Premier League is a huge one but I think there are times to make that move and I think Steven Gerrard made the wrong choice to go to Aston Villa last season.”

“Ange won’t make the same mistake. He can see what happens down there. I could be wrong – and I was wrong about Gerrard – but I think he will wait until the right opportunity comes around. I have the feeling he is enjoying where he is and he wants to achieve more at Celtic.

“However, I think if he continues to bring success then it will lead to offers and I get the feeling he would like to work in Europe rather than England. Brendan Rodgers couldn’t wait to leave Celtic after falling out with Peter Lawwell and now he’s under pressure and Leicester don’t look like a great option for anyone right now.”

Facing reality, Ange can’t remain in Paradise forever, he will have to move on eventually, even though it will most certainly break many Celtic hearts. However, Ange has the sense to leave at the time which will best benefit the development of his career, which luckily for us, won’t be for a while yet.

When Dermot Desmond interviewed Ange for the job he specifically asked for a long term commitment which Ange was happy to provide. Things can change but unlike Rodgers and his fall-out with Lawwell (bascially due to the then CEO losing faith in the transfer dealings of the manager), Postecoglou has a strong relationship with the current CEO Michael Nicholson and provided that Celtic continue to match Ange’s ambitions then he should be going nowhere soon.

Indeed Celtic might be ready to renegotiate Ange’s contract to keep him at the club for the long term and financially reward him for what has been a brilliant job at our football club.
