The outcome of this match hinged on Lille’s inability to put the ball in the net in a remarkable opening half an hour. They had numerous chances to go in front on the counterattack but were unable to convert any of them, starting when Mohamed Bayo’s shot was saved by Kasper Schmeichel in the 10th minute. Rémy Cabella somehow contrived to miss the target midway through the first half after being teed up by Jonathan David, and moments later he was denied by Schmeichel when clean through (27’). The Danish goalkeeper then did brilliantly to turn a Timothy Weah effort onto the post (31’).

Having somehow stayed on level terms, Nice showed their opponents how it should be done as they went ahead 10 minutes before half-time. Cabella was punished for a mistake as he gave possession straight to Badredine Bouanani. With the rest of the Lille team stranded upfield, Bouanani had a clear run on goal as he drew goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier and then squared for teammate Laborde to apply an easy finish.

The game was less open after the break, with Nice sitting deeper and defending their lead. Schmeichel did make another fine save from a Bafodé Diakité corner (47’) and Bayo hit the bar moments later, although he had just strayed offside. Aaron Ramsey missed the best chance for Nice to score again as his effort just before the hour mark was saved by Chevalier.

Nice have now picked up seven points from a possible nine since Didier Digard was named as interim coach following the sacking of Lucien Favre. They are now just six points behind Lille, who lost for the first time since the end of October.

THE PLAYER: Rémy Cabella

Cabella had a bit of a nightmare afternoon for Lille. He missed two huge chances to put the away side ahead in the first half and then made a mistake that was punished for the goal when he was caught in possession by Bouanani.

THE STAT: 6

Nice are now unbeaten in six home league games. Lille saw their six-game unbeaten run in the league come to an end.
