Stop me if you've heard this one before but the Kansas City Chiefs have a left tackle problem. It all started when they let Orlando Brown Jr. depart two years ago and they've been trying to find someone to protect Patrick Mahomes' blindside ever since.
Well, that someone this time around is Jaylon Moore, a backup during his four years with the San Francisco 49ers who started just 12 games. Former NFL cornerback turned NFL analyst Domonique Foxworth couldn't believe the Chiefs' poor decision-making here, comparing the signing of Moore to getting their star quarterback a used Nintendo.
“What are they doing in the passing game?” Foxworth asked on Wednesday’s edition of Get Up. “They've been telling him every year, ‘Patrick, if you make the honor roll, we're going to get you that Sega Genesis,’ the Sega Genesis being the left tackle. You know what they went and got him? They went and got him a used Nintendo, the left tackle who's not even a starter … It's frustrating for me because year after year, we see a different version of Patrick Mahomes. It's not the version that we want to see because they won't get that man a Sega.”
While Foxworth might have been a little too harsh here with his criticisms, I get what he was going for with this analogy. The Chiefs signed a guy with little experience at left tackle to protect their most important investment this year and that's incredibly risky.
Be that as it may, Moore did play well when thrust into playing time. This is a deal that Kansas City can get out of after one year if it doesn't work out and hopefully, they have a solid backup plan at left tackle if Moore struggles.
Left tackles are a hot commodity in the league and when Ronnie Stanley opted to stay with the Ravens, it put the Chiefs in a tough spot. Rather than overpaying for Dan Moore, the Chiefs went with Jaylon Moore and are hoping he can handle the transition into a full-time left tackle.
It's not surprising that this signing is going to be criticized but let's give Brett Veach some credit here. He surely must have something else up his sleeve, or at least we hope so.
