A €222m deal just two years ago made Neymar a Paris Saint-Germain player and the most expensive footballer of all time.
Now, though, he is being linked with a return to Camp Nou.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Brazilian forward regrets leaving Barcelona and is angling for a move back to the Spanish champions.
Both Mundo Deportivo and AS both say Neymar’s agents are looking for the move to happen “sooner rather than later”. The way Neymar’s 2017 transfer happened still stings Barcelona, but Wednesday’s Mundo Deportivo says the club have softened their view on the player and now would consider a sensational comeback.
Neymar’s move to Paris was made with the idea that he would be the star of the team, the league, and then world football. It offered him a platform to escape the constant comparisons with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
However, nobody foresaw how quickly Kylian Mbappé would develop. The 19-year-old joined PSG in the same summer as Neymar and is now a World Cup winner. Neymar may still be the star in Paris but Mbappé is truly adored there.
Neymar is said to regret his move now, with the report insisting he misses his former team-mates and is frustrated by the lack of competition in Ligue 1.
Since arriving in Ligue 1, Neymar has scored 27 goals and assisted a further 13 in just 28 appearances. On top of that, the 26-year-old has nine goals and four assists in nine Champions League matches.
With Real Madrid interested in the Brazilian, it would be a sensational coup for Barcelona to bring him back.
It would, though, be complicated. Neymar would cost an exorbitant amount of money now, with PSG not looking to sell him. Everybody at Barcelona would have to agree he would be a crucial member of the side and the club would have to convince the fans to welcome him back, or fear a backlash.
Striking a deal would be incredibly difficult but, right now, it doesn’t look totally impossible that Neymar would return to Barcelona.
