The hosts controlled territory and possession in the first half at the Maracanã, but struggled to break down a packed and disciplined La Roja defence.

That all changed just before the break when an ill-advised challenge by Mauricio Isla saw Neymar hit the turf.

The Paris Saint-Germain attacker dusted himself down before stepping up and coolly converting the spot kick by sending goalkeeper Claudio Bravo the wrong way.

Chile were unhappy with the award of the penalty, and that probably played its part in Brazil doubling their advantage with a second goal in quick succession.

Antony picked out Vinícius Júnior and the 21-year-old kept his composure to slide a shot through the legs of the advancing Bravo legs and register his first-ever senior goal for the Seleção.

Arturo Vidal looked to have halved the deficit for Chile shortly after the interval, but a lengthy VAR check concluded the veteran midfielder was fractionally offside at the moment substitute Joaquín Montecinos crossed from the right flank.

Brazil were awarded their second penalty when Bravo clattered into Antony just inside the area after the Ajax man had attempted a lob.

Neymar allowed Philippe Coutinho to do the honours and the rejuventated Aston Villa loanee made no mistake from 12 yards.

Richarlison was introduced late on, and he rounded off the scoring with a tidy left-footed finish to notch his 11th international goal.

The win sees Brazil remain unbeaten and move seven points clear of Argentina.

Chile slip down to seventh in the table, and look all but certain to miss out on the World Cup for the second consecutive time.
