Next season could be forgotten Ranger’s chance to shine

25 caps, striker, 19 caps for his country, 6 goals, 16 in 34 goals for his club, 5 assists, and a Premier League winners medal.

Now, if we read that CV, there’s barely a Ger alive who’d say this wasn’t worth £5M and we shouldn’t move for him.

And yet we did, and signed him.

That’s right, that’s Fashion Sakala up until he arrived at Rangers, where, we admit, his first season didn’t light the world up.

But the ground work is there for a player who has the quality to step up for sure, and while he was often a subject of utter derision last season, generally, we’ve seen enough glimpses of him to know he has the qualities.

What Sakala has to work on is his decision-making and football intelligence, and hopefully that is something this potentially excellent striker is doing this close season.

See, Sakala gives us the impression of Forrest Gump in a Rangers shirt – all the pace but absolutely no direction or culture with it, no idea where he’s going, grinning like a crazy cat.

And yet we’ve seen enough of his best days to know if Gio can refine this guy, can iron out the rough kinks in his game, he could be a great striker for Rangers.

Looking up, not making stupid runs, not paying little attention to offside – Sakala has the body and pace to be a very fine striker, but he has to refine himself.

Look at the example of Calvin Bassey – he came back in preseason a totally different player, a player with everything to prove. And he did it. Sakala needs this preseason to do the same, to show that he can deliver in a Rangers shirt as he did in Belgium for Oostende.

There’s a reason we brought this guy to Rangers, time for him to show it.
