FC Bayern’s search for a new coach has already resulted in cancellations from Xabi Alonso and Julian Nagelsmann. Now the next coach has declared that he is not available to the Munich club.

FC Bayern are continuing their search for a new coach and have already had to cross several candidates off their list.

Xabi Alonso would also like to coach German champions Bayer Leverkusen next season. Julian Nagelsmann extended his contract with the DFB until 2026, while Sebastian Hoeneß also signed a new contract with VfB Stuttgart, although he was rumoured to be a candidate for the German record champions. Ralf Rangnick publicly committed himself to the Austrian FA, where he is currently national team coach – even if this is probably not yet to be seen as a 100 per cent rejection of Bayern.

Now the next coach to turn down the FCB job, who at least appeared in the media on lists of candidates for the coaching position at the Isar: Roger Schmidt.

The German coach is currently under contract with Benfica Lisbon in Portugal and was approached there about the rumours of a possible engagement with FC Bayern.

The 57-year-old said: „It’s a great honour for me to be coach of Benfica. I knew exactly what I was doing when I signed a new contract with Benfica.“

Roger Schmidt: „Make a decision in favour of a club“

Schmidt has been in office in Lisbon since May 2022. In his first season in Portugal, he won the championship with the capital city club. He and his team are currently in second place in the Primeira Liga.

Schmidt’s contract in Lisbon runs until 2026 and the coach says he is not considering a move to FC Bayern: „If you look at my career, I make a decision for a club. I don’t make a different decision a few months later,“ he explained.

Schmidt not only won the title in Portugal: in 2014 he became Austrian champion and cup winner with Red Bull Salzburg, and in 2018 he won the Chinese Cup with Beijing Gouan. He also won the cup in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven.
