Newport County are set to confirm their latest managerial appointment.

According to South Wales Argus, Graham Coughlan is closing in on taking over the role.

It is expected that Coughlan will be brought into the club imminently, with it being understood that he will take charge of the team for the first time this weekend against Colchester United.

The League Two side have been searching for a new manager following the decision to dismiss James Rowberry last week.

It is believed that Coughlan won out in the race for the role against such candidates as Mark Cooper, the current Forest Green Rovers manager.

The former defender is currently out of work, having previously managed Bristol Rovers from 2018 to 2019, and Mansfield Town from 2019 to 2020.

His CV includes an impressive 4th place finish with Rovers in League One, but his time with the Stags was less successful.

Win Draw Lose

A poor run of form led to his dismissal, from which he moved on to a coaching role with the Sheffield United U23s side.

The Exiles currently find themselves 19th in the fourth division table, two points clear of the drop zone.

The Verdict

Coughlan’s career as a manager has been a slightly mixed bag, but if County can get the man who led Rovers to 4th in the third tier then this could be a very promising appointment.

While it hasn’t been an ideal start to the new campaign, there are still plenty of games left for this team to turn things around.

Avoiding any kind of relegation scrap will be the immediate goal.

Despite being 19th, the gap to the bottom two is still quite close so widening the distance between themselves and 23rd is a clear initial objective for Coughlan.
