Newcastle United are not planning to keep Allan Saint-Maximin beyond his current contract, though reports that manager Eddie Howe has agreed to sanction a sale this month are wide of the mark, 90min understands.

Saint-Maximin has established himself as one of the Premier League's most exciting - if not also frustrating - players since his 2019 arrival from Nice.

When Newcastle were taken over by PIF towards the end of 2021, the Frenchman was expected to be one of the faces of their new sporting project.

However, his impact has not been as noticeable since, with the likes of Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Callum Wilson emerging as the Magpies' key men.

Saint-Maximin has been linked with a move away from Tyneside in recent months, but 90min understands that reports of him being shown the exit door this month aren't necessarily accurate.

Saint-Maximin's contract at St James' Park runs to 2026 and so has plenty of time to run, but at this stage of their project, they have no plans to hand him another deal.

The 25-year-old ended last season with five goals in 37 games and started the firsts game of Newcastle's 2022/23 campaign - a 2-0 win at home to Nottingham Forest.
