For the first time in the new millennium, Newcastle United are preparing for a domestic cup final.

Ruud Gullit was in charge of the Magpies and hadn't yet fallen out with his captain Alan Shearer the last time Newcastle were 90 minutes away from silverware. Eddie Howe and his lucratively stocked squad are up against Manchester United in this month's Carabao Cup final; the same club that quashed dreams of a 1999 FA Cup.

Newcastle had to wait until December for their first victory at St James' Park last season. Going into February, the Magpies are yet to taste defeat on home turf in the current campaign.

Liverpool are the only side in the entire division that can boast a victory against the Magpies anywhere this season. Newcastle's tactical interpretation of time-keeping helped them to a point against league-leading Arsenal in January but cost them at Anfield, as Liverpool struck in the eighth minute of stoppage time.

Newcastle were scheduled to host Brighton for their final fixture of February before chirpily postponing the avian clash for the upcoming Carabao Cup showpiece.

Since its creation in 1960, Newcastle have only ever once reached the final of England's secondary cup competition. In 1976, Gordon Lee's Magpies fell to defeat against Manchester City. On Sunday 26 February at 16:30, Newcastle will be up against the red half of Manchester, in search of their first trophy since the 2006 Intertoto Cup.
