Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League after inflicting the latest defeat on struggling reigning champions Manchester City on Sunday and next up for the leaders is a trip to Newcastle United (kick-off 19:30, live on Amazon Prime) on Wednesday.

The Magpies have slipped to 11th after being held by Crystal Palace on Saturday but in a congested mid-table they are still well placed to mount a bid for a top-four place, trailing Brighton in fourth place by just four points.

Newcastle vs Liverpool predicted lineups

Newcastle (4-3-3): Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Longstaff, Joelinton, Guimaraes; Gordon, Isak, Barnes.

Liverpool (4-2-3-1): Kelleher; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Salah, Jones, Gakpo; Nunez.

Reds on a roll

Liverpool’s hugely impressive form under new boss Arne Slot hit a new high in the past week as the Reds followed up a 2-0 home win over European champions Real Madrid by seeing off rivals City by the same scoreline at Anfield on Sunday.

Slot’s men have won 11 of their 13 top-flight games and 18 of 20 in all competitions and they will hope to sustain that irresistible form over the busy winter period.

The midweek trip to St James’ Park is another test of their credentials as Eddie Howe’s side try to become just the third team to take anything off Liverpool this season.

After a disappointing home defeat to West Ham in their last home fixture, Newcastle thought they had earned a narrow 1-0 win at Palace on Saturday before a late equaliser at Selhurst Park denied them victory.

The Magpies have been inconsistent at home this season, mixing good victories over Tottenham and Arsenal and drawing with Man City, with frustrating defeats to the Hammers and Brighton.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Team News

Newcastle striker Alexander Isak picked up a hip injury in the draw with Palace at the weekend but it is not thought to be serious, so Howe is hopeful that the Swedish star will be fit to start.

If he is ruled out, Callum Wilson is likely to come in for the hosts, who are still without Sven Botman (knee), Jamaal Lascelles (knee) and Emil Krafth (shoulder), with that trio unlikely to play until the New Year.

Joelinton is being hampered by a shoulder injury as well, but the Brazilian is expected to be passed fit. Liverpool goalkeeper Allison remains out with a hamstring injury so Caoimhin Kelleher will continue to deputise.

Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas and Conor Bradley are all sidelined with injuries too, so Joe Gomez should keep his place at centre-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold returned at the weekend after recovering from a hamstring injury, and Harvey Elliott came off the bench for his first appearance since August.

If Slot decides to freshen things up, Curtis Jones and Darwin Nunez, who were both among the subs on Sunday, could come in for the visitors.
