However, Arne Slot’s side face a tricky spell ahead of them with five of their next six games in all competitions away from home, starting in the North East.

Newcastle will be determined to burst Liverpool’s bubble and bounce back from a dip in results, after they conceded a late equaliser at the weekend against Crystal Palace.

Eddie Howe has confirmed that Alexander Isak hasn’t trained in the lead-up to Wednesday’s game after taking a knock to his hip. The Swede joins the injured defensive trio of Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Emil Krafth on the treatment table.

Federico Chiesa has returned to first-team training for Liverpool after not making a matchday squad since September. Alisson is also nearing a return but may find it hard to reclaim his place due to Caoimhin Kelleher’s stellar form.

It has been a disappointing week for the Magpies with two poor results in the league.

At the weekend, they were seconds away from a hard-fought victory at Crystal Palace, before Daniel Munoz scored in the fourth minute of stoppage time to level for the hosts.

Before that draw in South London, Newcastle were well beaten at home by a struggling West Ham outfit. It was a mediocre display from Eddie Howe’s men who couldn’t impose themselves on proceedings at St. James’ Park.

However, due to the tight nature of the league, Newcastle are only four points outside of the top four and find themselves in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

The Merseysiders extended their winning run to seven matches at the weekend by defeating Manchester City.

The Reds were rarely threatened by their opposition and deservedly earned three points, thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

Arne Slot has made an instant impact in English football and after 20 games the Dutchman has only lost once. Liverpool are nine points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Last Meeting: Liverpool 4-2 Newcastle, Premier League, 1st January 2024.

Liverpool commenced the New Year in style as they triumphed in a six-goal thriller at Anfield.

Martin Dubravka denied Mohamed Salah from the spot in a goalless first half before the game burst into life after the break. Salah atoned for his missed penalty minutes after the restart when he tapped into an empty net after being teed up by Darwin Nunez.

It didn’t take long for Newcastle to cancel out Salah’s opener with Alexander Isak cleverly poking past Alisson. A fantastic team goal saw Liverpool regain their lead, with Diogo Jota selfishly setting up Curtis Jones to finish from two yards out.

Salah then produced an excellent piece of skill to pick out Cody Gakpo in the box with the outside of his foot. The defence-splitting pass gave the Dutchman the chance to bundle in Liverpool’s third with ten minutes to play.

Newcastle would make it interesting when Sven Botman’s bullet header flew into the bottom corner. But the hosts made sure the points were guaranteed after Jota was brought down by Dubravka in the box and Salah made no mistake with his penalty this time.
