Newcastle United are interested in luring Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn away from the Villa Park club to the St James’ Park club this summer, according to the Daily Mail.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe wants to reinforce his options in the middle of the park by signing the Villa skipper after Sean Longstaff left for Leeds United and Joe Willock picked up a possible long-term injury last week.

The billionaire-owned Magpies are convinced that the 30-year-old McGinn could be a solid addition to their midfield, and there is word that the Scotland international could be available this window.

He played in 49 games across all competitions last season, weighing in with four goals and six assists.

Newcastle could do with his quality as they look to impress in the Champions League next term and challenge for major silverware again after winning the Carabao Cup last term.

The Villa star has two years remaining to run on his contract, and this summer could be the best time to sell him for a fee of worth.

However, his club have already rebuffed interest from Everton and Villans manager Unai Emery also does not want to lose such a key player anytime soon as he looks to compete strongly in the Europa League in 2025-26.

Villa need to sell some of their top stars as they desperately try to remain compliant with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules after UEFA fined them earlier this summer for breaching their financial rules.

McGinn could be sacrificed after seven seasons at the Midlands club, and the opportunity to play in the Champions League and win silverware could be appealing to the Scottish ace.

He has played 203 Premier League games for Villa and made a total of 285 appearances, bagging 30 goals and 40 assists, and the chance to play elsewhere could be tempting to the former Hibernian star.
