A brilliant win for Eddie Howe and his team.

Much deserved, as after a scrappy opening half hour, they took control and after scoring on the 40 minute mark, created a lot of chances and were by far the better team.

United off the bottom of the table as well, above Norwich on goal difference at least until the Canaries visit Tottenham on Sunday. Burnley now only ahead of NUFC on goal difference, though with a game in hand.

Newcastle three points off safety, as Watford face Man City in the late Saturday kick-off.

A predictably high energy start to the match.

Eddie Howe having his team trying to get on the front foot but the first 20 or so minutes seeing little quality from either side.

A shot from the left side of the box from Gudmundsson was deflected wide and looked as if it clipped the outside of the post.

Martin Dubravka having his first save to make on 21 minutes from a Maxwel Cornet header.

Newcastle then replied with the first decent run from Allan Saint-Maximin, making progress down the left and then cutting back to Shelvey on the edge of the box, who unfortunately completely miscued his shot.

Just ahead of the half hour mark, Newcastle’s best moment so far. An excellent ASM run saw him reach the edge of the box and chip a clever ball for Wilson to meet eight yards out but a brilliant saving block from a Burnley defender stopped a goal.

Another ASM run and cross from the left was deflected beyond Almiron at the far post, the Paraguayan doing really well to bring the ball down and turn in one movement, his shot striking the arm of the closing defender but a corner given, as the ball travelled very little distance before striking his arm.

Newcastle had been getting nothing from the referee in the opening half, as any minor decisions went Burnley’s way.

Then the moment, Willock crossed from the left on 40 minutes and the Burnley keeper came a long way out, caught the high ball, but then landed on Schar, Pope spilling the ball in the process. Wilson picked up the loose ball on the edge of the box and expertly rounded the fallen keeper and defenders, firing it from 15 yards out into the roof of the net above a defender’s head.

No surprise that was then a delay as we waited to see if VAR could find a reason to prevent the goal being given but it was always going to be ok…phew!

The goal opened up the game after what had been a pretty poor 40 minutes.

Allan Saint-Maximin enjoying the increased space but it was Burnley who could and should have equalised, as substitute Vydra (replacing the dangerous looking Cornet) in added time chesting down the ball from a right side ball delivered to just left centre inside the box. Unmarked he lifted his half volley wildly over the bar as Schar went to close.

The final action of the half saw ASM set free one on one down the right side, Newcastle had three running into the box and the Frenchman cut the ball back, only for Willock to blaze over the bar from around 12 yards out.

Eddie Howe no doubt happy to hear the half-time whistle, get his team in and hopefully set up to successfully ensure this lead isn’t going to be squandered.

The second half starting as the first one ended. A quality ASM ball over the top looked to have released Wilson but Pope came out of his box and just won the race to the ball.

Newcastle then enjoying some good pressure around the Burnley box before ASM shot straight at the keeper.

On 55 minutes, Wilson picking up the ball after dropping deeper and picking out Almiron’s clever diagonal run and his low shot from the edge of the box was turned around the post by Pope’s fingertips.

Newcastle continuing to get plenty of players forward and ASM picking up the ball and finding space to run to just outside the box and shooting against a defender when he had better options, including Joelinton unmarked to his right.

Burnley with usual aerial tactics and repeatedly looping high balls over the top but credit to Schar and Lascelles as they repeatedly repelled the physical visitors.

Joelinton having another decent game as he was all action across the middle of the pitch, as well as being the target when Dubravka cleared up front. Manquillo and Lewis also surely proving once again that they are the best options from this squad to play either side at the back.

With 20 minutes to go, a really good move ended up with Lewis getting down the left and his low ball was only just prevented from reaching Joelinton on the edge of the six yard box.

On 77 minutes, Almiron cut in from the left, his bending shot beating the keeper but a defender saving Burnley by heading for a corner.

Next up two minutes later, Shelvey curling right footed from the left side and Pope tipping over.

All Newcastle United at this point.

Then seven minutes to go, Rodriguez has the ball in the net…offside!

Eddie Howe responding with Federico Fernandez coming on for Almiron. The Paraguayan having made a decent comeback into the team.

Class support throughout the game from the terraces.

Burnley shocking to watch and the final whistle bringing the win!

Only 1-0 but in reality Newcastle deserving it to have been three or four.

Not that Eddie Howe will be complaining as he punched the air!
