Newcastle United welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to St James’ Park on Sunday looking to halt their recent losing run.

On the back of two successive league defeats, Newcastle’s Champions League dream is slowly slipping away as they run the risk of being overhauled by Liverpool.

Having been defeated just twice all season (both against Liverpool), Eddie Howe’s side were expected to put up a strong showing against Manchester City last weekend.

Despite holding the reigning champions to a thrilling 3-3 draw in the reverse fixture, a faltering Newcastle side failed to replicate their first-leg form as they were overpowered 2-0 by City.

It is still impressive that Howe’s side have suffered the joint-least defeats this term (three along with Arsenal), but a record of just one win in their last eight outings (D5, L2) does not speak well for the ambitious Magpies.

Howe will hope March has better fortunes in store for his side than February, but despite already starting the month with defeat, Newcastle will fancy their chances against a struggling Wolves side that have managed just one win in their last four outings.

Adama Traore proved an unlikely hero for Julen Lopetegui’s side last weekend when his late strike helped Wolves down Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on home turf.

After enduring an abysmal start to the season, Wolves have put some daylight between themselves and the bottom three, having established a five-point advantage over 18th-placed Everton.

However, they can ill afford complacency at this crucial stage of the season, and picking up consecutive wins for the second time under Lopetegui’s tutelage will strengthen their bid for a top-flight stay.

This fixture has a history of ending in a stalemate as both sides have shared the spoils by a 1-1 scoreline in their last 15 meetings – only Chelsea vs Manchester United (14) and Arsenal vs Tottenham (12) have ended by the same scoreline more times.

The match-up also pits the team with the fewest goals conceded (Newcastle – 17) against the side with the joint-fewest goals scored (Wolves – 19) in the league this season.

Match Preview

Newcastle United

Newcastle’s 1-0 win in this fixture last season ended a run of five home league games without a win against Wolves. They will be hoping another positive result against Sunday’s opposition will spark an upturn in fortunes.

Howe’s side have lost their last three matches in all competitions without making the net ripple, having lost just twice in their first 29 games this season. They will be hoping to avoid losing four on the trot without reply for the first time since January 2021.

After a run of six consecutive clean sheets, Newcastle have conceded in each of their last four league games (D2, L2). They have shipped six goals across these four games, one more than they had in their previous 15 combined (5).

Callum Wilson will be itching to finally register a goal against Wolves, having played more games (8) and more minutes (661) against Sunday’s opponents without scoring than he has against any other side in his career.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Since their return to the English top flight in 2018, Wolves have conceded just once in all nine of their meetings with Newcastle, although they have managed just two wins across those nine games (D6, L1).

Wolves have won five of their 11 league games under Lopetegui (D2, L4). The only teams that have won more games since the Spaniard’s arrival are currently placed in the top seven (Arsenal, Man City, Manchester United, Fulham, and Liverpool).

Raul Jimenez has been directly involved in three goals in his last three league games against Newcastle (one goal and two assists). However, the Mexican has failed to score a league goal in over a year since he scored against Watford in March last year.
