Newcastle United and Bournemouth are set to square off at St James’ Park in their first Premier League encounter since June 2020.
Saturday’s fixture on Tyneside comes amid Newcastle’s rough patch, with Eddie Howe’s side going unbeaten in their last five league outings (D4, L1).
Despite unleashing 23 attempts, the Magpies failed to score in a 0-0 home draw against fellow bottom-half strugglers Crystal Palace last time out.
Another controversial VAR decision to rule out what could’ve been a game-winning goal for Newcastle against Patrick Vieira’s side left Howe fuming.
But a seven-day break from Premier League football might have served to calm down the nerves in the home camp and prepare them for Bournemouth’s visit.
Unlike their hosts, Gary O’Neil’s team should take the field in a confident mood after turning a 2-0 half-time deficit into a sensational 3-2 win away to fellow newcomers Nottingham Forest in the previous round.
A phenomenal come-from-behind triumph at the City Ground helped the Cherries halt a disappointing four-match winless streak in the Premier League (D1, L3) and steer themselves into mid-table comforts.
Still waiting for a new manager after the sacking of Scott Parker, Bournemouth will make this journey with O’Neil as a caretaker boss, hopeful of defying an underwhelming top-flight record against Newcastle.
Newcastle United
The Magpies have only lost two of their eight Premier League clashes against Bournemouth, yet it’s worth noting that both those defeats arrived at St James’ Park (W4, D2).
Despite failing to keep a clean sheet in their last seven Premier League meetings with the Cherries, Newcastle can hope for the best after winning three consecutive league games against promoted sides.
Moreover, Howe has turned St James’ Park into a fortress, as his men have only lost one of their last 13 top-flight fixtures on home turf (W8, D4), conceding one goal or fewer on 12 occasions.
Bournemouth
Keen to arrest a two-match losing Premier League streak away to Newcastle, Bournemouth can leapfrog their hosts on the standings should they win their first game here since November 2017.
But the 18 league goals they’ve conceded so far is the joint-most seen after six Premier League matchdays in the competition’s history, so the visitors should not be overly enthusiastic.
With 15 of those 18 goals coming on their travels, O’Neil’s team will have to rely on their frontline to undo any potential damage at the back.
Yet a mere 34 shots in the Premier League this season are at least 22 fewer than any other side.
Newcastle United (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Fabian Schar, Sven Botman, Matt Targett; Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff, Joelinton; Miguel Almiron, Alexander Isak, Allan Saint-Maximin.
Bournemouth (4-4-2): Neto; Adam Smith, Chris Mepham, Lloyd Kelly, Jordan Zemura; Ryan Christie, Lewis Cook, Jefferson Lerma, Marcus Tavernier; Philip Billing; Dominic Solanke.

Compared to Forest’s porous backline, Newcastle’s rock-solid rearguard may prove impenetrable for Bournemouth’s uneventful attack.
And with Alexander Isak and Allan Saint-Maximin leading the line on the other side, the Cherries’ flaky defence could be in for a long ride.
We back Howe’s team to get back to winning ways in a thumping fashion.
