In a recent report, The Daily Star revealed that Newcastle United are set to rival West Ham United for Manchester United outcast Jesse Lingard this month. It is believed that the Magpies are willing to pay in excess of £3m to acquire the English talent’s services during this winter transfer period.

Lingard’s Limited Role At The Theatre Of Dreams This Season

Lingard is having a frustrating campaign with the Red Devils as he has struggled to earn regular playing minutes for them over the past few months. The 29-year-old has played in 14 matches for Man United this season, netting two goals and providing one assist on all fronts.

All of the English playmaker’s league appearances have come off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.4 shots, 0.2 key passes and 0.1 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, Lingard has been excellent when distributing the ball in the final third, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 92.9% in league football (stats via whoscored).

Is Lingard The Right Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?

Lingard is a decent playmaker who has got the eye to unlock the opposition defence with a killer pass in the attacking end of the field. He can even make some exciting runs with the ball towards the opponent’s penalty box and is quite clever with his movements off the ball as well.

The England international can score goals consistently in top-flight football when he is playing regularly on the pitch. Thus, a change of scenery this month could do the player’s confidence a world of good as he will be able to get back to playing at his best.

Newcastle can definitely use someone of Lingard’s skill set to add more creativity and goals to Eddie Howe‘s attack. His current contract at Old Trafford is set to expire at the end of this season. Therefore, the Magpies have every chance of getting a deal done for him if they can agree on a fee with the Red Devils before the end of this month. All in all, Lingard will be a great choice for the Tyneside giants to recruit in January as he is good enough to keep them in the Premier League this season.
