Newcastle United are prepared to intensify their efforts to sign Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw, as reports from Italy claim the Magpies’ opening bid for the 24-year-old was only the start of their barrage of interest.

According to what has been reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport, the Premier League club will raise the stakes following the €30 million offer turned down by the Rossoneri earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Gazzetta also claim that Milan’s pursuit of Zachary Athekame has stalled after Young Boys raised their asking price for the 20-year-old right-back to €13 million.

Reports from Sky earlier this week also suggested that the German defender had agreed personal terms with Newcastle on a potential four-year deal.

If Eddie Howe’s side wish to secure their man, it is likely the Premier League outfit will need to bid around the €40 million mark. However, the Magpies seem intent on Thiaw and with news of their pursuit being turned up a notch, the Rossoneri may choose to cash in on the player – even though Massimiliano Allegri sees a future for him in his Milan set-up.
