Newcastle United team of managers – Surely they are unbeatable?

Is it possible to beat this Newcastle United team of managers?

The idea formed after I saw something online.

It was on Twitter/X and the @NUFCThreatLevel account talking about the Newcastle United manager or Assistant boss making an appearance in pre-season friendlies.

It brings back a vivid memory for me almost 25 years to the day, on 24 July 1999 I was down at Reading for a pre-season friendly, Newcastle United drawing 2-2 and the highlight being Ruud Gullit playing for NUFC, as well as his assistant Steve Clarke.

I can remember it was very hot that day and pretty sure that both Gullit and Clarke played at least a full half, if not more. It wasn’t a token five minutes.

I also recall Ruud Gullit was excellent, think he played middle of the defence, Steve Clarke probably/possibly in central defence with him. Just checked their ages and at the time Gullit was 36 and Clarke 35, so maybe no surprise that both could put on a decent show.

Anyway…

This got me thinking of putting together a full Newcastle United team of managers.

I limited myself to those who have managed Newcastle United in the last 40 years and I wondered just how good a team it would produce, these Newcastle United managers judging them on ability in their best playing era.

Turns out, not a bad side, plus some decent options on the bench.

My Newcastle United team of managers (who have managed NUFC from 1984 onwards):

Willie McFaul (Northern Ireland)

Joe Kinnear (Republic of Ireland)

Jack Charlton (England)

Chris Hughton (Republic of Ireland)

Ossie Ardiles (Argentina)

Graeme Souness (Scotland)

Kevin Keegan (England)

Ruud Gullit (Holland)

Kenny Dalglish (Scotland)

Sir Bobby Robson (England)

Alan Shearer (England)

That’s right, my Newcastle United team of managers, all full internationals.

Not just that, some absolutely stellar players.

It would be a very attractive attacking line-up as well.

My Newcastle United team of managers would possibly form up something like this:

McFaul

Kinnear, Charlton, Hughton

Ardiles, Souness

Keegan, Gullit, Robson, Dalglish

Shearer

What a team!

Especially those seven in midfield and up front.

Is there really any fanbase of another English club, or indeed any club anywhere in the world, that could beat this Newcastle United team of managers of the last 40 years? Please let me know in the comments.
