Kieran Trippier is one of a number of Newcastle players where there has been speculation on their future.

So what does Olivier Bernard think about what should happen with the 33-year-old?

Some pretty confused logic from what I can see, including/especially with his valuation…

Former Newcastle United defender Olivier Bernard talking about Kieran Trippier to BBC Newcastle – 24 July 2024:

“Kieran Trippier is a very bankable player at the minute because he’s an England player and I don’t think he will be in two years, so if you want to let him go, do it now.

“At the same time, you’re trying to develop a team.

“Livramento has been watching Trippier over the past year and taking inspiration from what he does.

“I’m sure Livramento is ready – he showed he could fill his boots more than once last year, so I wouldn’t have an issue with that.

But Trippier is very important for the dressing room.

“Kieran Trippier has got the experience, he’s played every game almost at the Euros and he’s a recognised, good player.

“Regardless of his age, he’d still do a job for any side and bring something better.

“For me, he’s worth £20m at least and probably push it to £30m if he stays in England.

“He’s a leader and somebody you want to keep.

“He’s a real role model for a lot of young players at the club.

“I don’t think his career is finished and I think he’s good enough to give you another season.

“But Newcastle United have got a fantastic young player [in Tino Livramento] who is waiting to flourish and we cannot delay his talent any longer.”

As I say, some pretty confused logic.

Olivier Bernard giving some high praise to Kieran Trippier but then also suggesting a good idea to sell him now.

Kieran Trippier has not only performed so well for Newcastle United as an individual and as a team player, he has also been the captain on the pitch for the vast majority of these last two years as well. With Lascelles set to be missing for a number of further months AND then unlikely to be first choice either, Kieran Trippier will surely continue as captain on the pitch this coming season.

As Bernard says, Kieran Trippier has been very good for England this summer and showed for sure he can still perform at the highest level, so why sell him now???

Tino Livramento is still recovering from last season’s ankle injury and as of last Friday hadn’t even been able to join in group training, so no sure thing he will even be available for the early matches of the new season.

Plus, why such a hurry to deprive Newcastle United of two great quality options at right-back? Especially when both are versatile and can also play left-back?

Kieran Trippier may be worth it to Newcastle United but Bernard’s claims that he could be sold for £30m+, is just crazy.

Bayern Munich made three offers in January for Kieran Trippier and the highest of those was £12.8m (€15m), which were all turned down by Newcastle United.

Half a season on and set to turn 34 on 19 September, no way anybody is paying £30m, no matter how good Kieran Trippier still is.

If say £30m transfer fee and a two-year contract, you would be looking at up to a £50m outlay for two seasons of football at the very most and no resale value.

For me, it makes massive sense to Newcastle United and Kieran Trippier AND Tino Livramento, for the status quo to be maintained. The 21-year-old continuing to learn from such an experienced and accomplished player as Kieran Trippier, then maybe say with the intention of by the time the 2025/26 season kicks off, Tino Livramento set to be the undisputed first-choice at right-back.
