Newcastle United sign former Southampton full-back Purfield | OneFootball

Newcastle United have completed the signing of former Southampton full-back Jemma Purfield on a free transfer.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Magpies this morning.

The 28-year-old defender joins the Tynesiders after leaving former club Southampton upon the expiry of her contract last month.

Purfield has a wealth of experience in the professional game. The player started out with Doncaster Rovers Belles before joining Durham. Purfield then moved to the United States to combine playing football with her studies before joining Liverpool upon her return to the UK. Spells with Bristol City and Leicester City followed before the defender joined latest club Southampton in 2023.

After completing her move to Newcastle United, Purfield said “I’m really happy to get the move done. The ambition of the club aligned with my ambition, so I just want to help them get to the WSL.

“When you look at the project of the club and the journey it’s on, especially on the women’s side, the only way is up, so it’s an exciting time to be part of this club.”

Purfield is Newcastle United head coach Becky Langley’s first signing of the summer transfer window.
