Newcastle United retain interest in Manchester United star

It’s been a challenging season for Manchester United goalkeeper, who ended last year as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s preferred choice between the posts.

An injury last summer meant he had to withdraw from the England squad and upon his return to United for pre-season, the 25-year-old contracted COVID-19 and had preparations badly scuppered as a result.

Since then, David de Gea has rediscovered himself and is likely to become United’s player of the year, making Henderson’s bid to retain that number one spot unlikely.

Henderson was linked with a move to free-spending Newcastle over the winter but despite a transfer not materialising in the January window, he could now be the subject of renewed interest from Eddie Howe’s side.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who say that Newcastle retain their interest in Henderson following his tough season at Old Trafford.

As per the report, Henderson intends to leave United this summer, whether that’s permanently or temporary if Erik ten Hag persists with De Gea as his first-choice goalkeeper next season.

And Newcastle are said to be ready to pounce, with the newly cash-infused club said to be considering a huge £40m deal for Henderson.

Henderson’s desire to leave is believed to be driven by this year’s World Cup but a loan departure is thought to be far likelier than a permanent exit, with his current contract running for a further three years.

Henderson is yet to feature in the Premier League this season and has only made three appearances overall, one in each cup competition.

SN’s verdict… Henderson enjoyed a terrific two-year loan at Sheffield United and when he returned to the club in 2020, it was believed he would swiftly replace De Gea amid the Spaniard’s dwindling form. It hasn’t quite worked out that way and in the last 12 months, Henderson’s career has nosedived.

As stated in the report from the Manchester Evening News, United are likely to sign a backup goalkeeper if there are notable departures in that area and it could be time for Henderson to seek minutes elsewhere.
