Serie A giants Roma have dropped out of the chance for Santos striker Marcos Leonardo and Newcastle United are now pursuing a move for the Brazilian.

Roma were keen on signing the 20-year-old in the summer but they could never meet Santos’ asking price and they later ended up signing Sardar Azmoun and Romelu Lukaku.

Marco Conterio has reported that Roma have dropped out of the chase for Leonardo, unless they sell one of Andrea Belotti or Azmoun in January. As of now, it seems quite unlikely that the Giallorossi pursue a move for the 20-year-old in the winter transfer window.

Newcastle are interested in Leonardo and are studying the possibility of moving for him in January. The striker would also be interested in leaving Santos in January, with the Brazilian side having endured a difficult campaign as they find themselves at 15th in the table.

In 24 games, Leonardo has scored 13 times and has also racked up two assists in what has been an otherwise disappointing campaign for Santos.
