In a recent report, Fanatik claimed that Newcastle United are preparing to launch a move for Fenerbahce midfielder Irfan Kahveci this summer. It is believed that the Magpies want to recruit the Turkey international and could move in for him during this summer transfer period (via Fanatik).

Kahveci’s Impressive Form In Turkish Football Last Season

Since making a switch from Istanbul Basaksehir last January, the Corum-born talent caught the eye with a couple of decent performances but still has a lot to learn before he can be a top performer at the highest level. Kahveci featured in 12 matches for the Turkish outfit in the second half of last season, picking up two assists in the process across all competitions.

The Turkey international managed to impress by averaging 2.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.0 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per game in the Turkish Super Lig. The 26-year-old was even excellent when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 85.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Turkish football (stats via whoscored).

Kahveci is currently playing some of the best football of his career, so he could turn out to be a shrewd addition to the Magpies squad if Steve Bruce can successfully bring him to St. James’ Park ahead of the new campaign.

Will Kahveci Be A Good Fit For The Magpies?

Kahveci is a quick and agile midfielder who can pull off some energetic dashes towards the opponent’s penalty box. He is a good dribbler with the ball and can also get stuck in with a few crunching tackles to hamper the opposition’s rhythm in the game at the centre of the park. Kahveci is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as an attacking midfielder or as a left-sided wide player if required.

The 21-time Turkey international can even contribute by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield. Plus, he hardly gives away the ball when interchanging possession with his teammates in the final third.

Hence, Kahveci will be a decent fit for the Magpies as he will add a lot of quality to Bruce’s midfield department. He will inject some much-needed goals and creativity to Newcastle’s first team and could go on to form a solid midfield partnership with Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff in the coming seasons. At 26, Kahveci’s best years are ahead of him, so Bruce can expect to make the most out of his services if he can devise a way to secure his signature during this summer transfer window.
