On Wednesday afternoon, Newcastle United have made an official announcement / request for fans not to get dressed up ‘Arabic’ style for matches, unless that is indeed their usual attire.

Steve Bruce’s final defeat on Sunday had seen the new NUFC owners in the stands, watching on as hundreds of Newcastle United fans had ‘dressed up’ for the occasion.

None of the Newcastle United owners were offended themselves BUT they are asking supporters to refrain from wearing similar stuff in the future, as other people might get offended.

I think this is one where the new NUFC owners couldn’t really win either way, with some people / campaign groups calling for supporters not to do it as it could / would cause offence. Whilst Newcastle United fans no doubt more split as to whether it was just having a laugh, or looked a bit naff / embarrassing.

So thousands of Geordie housewives (and househusbands) can rest easy that they won’t in the future find the tea towel drawer empty.

For older fans, they will be wondering what people today would make of it when some Newcastle supporters took to wearing (Mexican) sombreros in honour of Mirandinha arriving from Brazil, a country thousands of miles away from Mexico…

‘Newcastle United is kindly asking supporters to refrain from wearing traditional Arabic clothing or Middle East-inspired head coverings at matches if they would not ordinarily wear such attire.

A number of supporters have recently attended St. James’ Park wearing associated head coverings and robes, marking the takeover of the club by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media.

No-one among the new ownership group was in any way offended by the attire of the fans who chose to celebrate in this way. It was a gesture that was acknowledged as positive and welcoming in its intent.

However, there remains the possibility that dressing this way is culturally inappropriate and risks causing offence to others. All visitors to the club are, as always, encouraged to wear whatever is the norm for their own culture or religion, continuing to reflect the broad and rich multicultural communities and groups from which the club proudly draws its support.
