Newcastle United have been dealt a knockout blow in their bid to bring Mitchel Bakker to St James’ Park in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Luke Edwards, with The Telegraph journalist revealing on Twitter that the Magpies’ hopes of securing a deal to sign the Bayer Leverkusen left-back this month are all but over.

Previous reports had suggested that PIF were in talks with the Bundesliga side regarding a £16m deal for the Netherlands under-21 international, with Leverkusen reportedly open to parting with the 21-year-old this month as long as they could find a replacement for the defender.

However, in his tweet, Edwards said: “Mitchel Bakker deal is off.”

Would Bakker have been a good signing for £16m?

Fans will be livid

Considering just how much potential Bakker quite clearly possesses, the news that Newcastle’s move for the left-back now appears dead in the water is sure to have left the St James’ Park faithful fuming.

Indeed, over his 13 Bundesliga appearances so far this season, the £9m-rated defender has helped his side to keep two clean sheets, in addition to making one interception, 1.3 tackles and 1.9 clearances and winning 4.2 duels per game.

However, it is in an attacking capacity in which the 21-year-old has impressed most in the current campaign. He has scored one goal, registered three assists and created two big chances for his team-mates in 2021/22, as well as taking 0.6 shots and making 0.5 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

As such, it is clear to see that the 21-year-old would have made an exceptional addition to Eddie Howe’s current options on the left-hand side of his Newcastle backline. However, following Edwards’ latest update, it would now appear that the chances of the Magpies landing Bakker over what remains of the January transfer window are slim to none – an outcome which will undoubtedly leave the Toon Army and their 44-year-old manager feeling gutted.
