Newcastle United are considering a move for Torino centre-back Perr Schuurs this summer, reports Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb.

Schuurs joined Torino from Ajax last August, arriving on a four-year contract for an estimated €9 million.

He has wasted little time in making an impact at his new club, keeping 11 clean sheets from 29 appearances.

Alongside Italian defender Alessandro Buongiorno, the Dutchman has forged a stern centre-back partnership.

Il Toro have conceded 38 league goals this season – the sixth-fewest in Serie A and the second-fewest outside the top four.

However, with the club in 11th place, it is unlikely they will be able to hold onto both of their first-choice centre-backs.

At least one of them will reportedly be sold this summer to raise money, and Newcastle United are in the hunt for Schuurs.

The Magpies boast the best defensive record in the Premier League, conceding just 27 in 33 outings while keeping 13 clean sheets. This has taken them to third in the table, closing in on Champions League qualification.

If they secure European football for next season, they will be operating under a much busier schedule. As a result, additional depth will be required.

Eddie Howe’s options at centre-back are relatively thin. Sven Botman and Fabian Schar have performed admirably, but Jamaal Lascelles is the club’s only natural back-up.

And, given the age of Schar and Lascelles, a more long-term signing may be welcome.

Next up for Newcastle is a clash with title contenders Arsenal at St James’ Park. This is followed by a trip to relegation battlers Leeds United.
