In a recent report, The Sun stated that Newcastle United are locked in a three-way battle for Juventus midfielder Aaron Ramsey. It is believed that the Magpies along with West Ham United and Everton are all eyeing a move to secure the services of the Welsh midfielder on a free transfer with Juve willing to cut him loose as he is currently on high wages.

Ramsey’s Injury-Plagued Season At The Allianz Stadium

Ramsey was a useful presence in Juve’s match-day squad last season but missed a lot of key games for them due to various injuries. There are some serious doubts over his long-term health which could be why the Turin club might consider letting him go this winter. The ex-Arsenal midfield ace scored two goals and provided five assists in 30 matches for the Italian side last season across various competitions.

The Caerphilly-born talent performed well to average 1.0 tackles, 1.1 shots, 1.4 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the 2020-21 Serie A campaign. Ramsey has been excellent with his ball distribution after making 87.1% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division last season (stats via whoscored).

At 30, Ramsey would believe that he has still got a few years left in him to play at a high level. Hence, he could be a shrewd acquisition for Newcastle if they can find a way to bring him to St. James’ Park on a free transfer this winter.

Is Ramsey A Good Fit For The Magpies?

Ramsey can still be a good creative outlet for his team as he has got the vision to unlock the opposition defence with a killer pass in the final third. He is primarily a box to box midfielder but can also fill in as a wide player or function in the number ten position if needed.

His goals and assists numbers seem to have dried up this season but he remains a capable performer in Juve’s squad. If Ramsey can overcome his recent injury problems, he has got the experience and winning mindset to be a success story at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.

The veteran midfielder will be a decent fit for the Tyneside outfit as they need a new fresh face to challenge Jonjo Shelvey and Sean Longstaff for a regular starting spot over the next few seasons. Ramsey’s arrival will also free up Steve Bruce to use Miguel Almiron as a winger rather than play him in central midfield and restrict his attacking potential. With all things considered, Newcastle should prioritize on a move for the Welsh talent if he is available as a free agent in January.
