Newcastle United have joined the race for Nat Phillips and they could look to sign the defender from Liverpool this summer, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The Reds have got Phillips to thank, in part, for helping a third-place finish in the Premier League table being achieved, with Champions League football being earned on the back of that.

However, whether or not he is going to play a part at the club next season remains to be seen with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all set to return from injury and Ibrahima Konate also arriving this summer.

Indeed, Newcastle could be looking to profit from that according to the Mail.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

Phillips is a good player but whether he is good enough to be in the Liverpool defensive line-up when all our options are fit and firing is probably up for debate.

You might think it’s worth keeping him for certain games against teams that are direct in nature but Jurgen Klopp will have a view on it too.

It could well be the case that Phillips decides what’s best for him this summer, and we’ll have to see what that means.
