Newcastle are working on getting a replacement, and Berge has emerged as an option. The 24-year-old Norwegian international is also on Fulham’s radar.

He was omitted from the Blades’ squad that played Wrexham in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Fulham have opened talks with the Championship club over a deal, and Newcastle need to move swiftly.

There are just some hours left in the January transfer window, and only Anthony Gordon has joined the Toons squad.

The St James Park club are third in the Premier League table following an explosive start to the campaign.

However, they need one or two more quality additions this month to boost their dreams of finishing in the top four.

Berge has played 19 Championship games this term, scoring four goals and assisting three others.

He bagged six goals and four assists in 33 Championship appearances last term and a top player.

The Norwegian joined the Blades as their record signing for £22 million from Genk in January 2020.

He scored two goals and assisted two others in 29 Premier League matches before the Blades got relegated.

Berge was once linked with Liverpool and he has the quality to help improve Newcastle.

However, completing a loan deal for him could prove tricky, with Fulham interested in buying him.
