Newcastle United have become the latest Premier League club to show an interest in striking a deal for Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge before Tuesday night’s transfer deadline.

That is according to a report from the print edition of The Mirror (29/01/2023), via The Chronicle’s live transfer blog (12:12pm), with the Magpies looking to strike a deal of around £15 million to bolster their options in the engine room.

But that figure may not be enough as it has emerged today via Sky Sports that Newcastle’s top flight rivals Fulham have submitted an offer worth at least £20 million for the 24-year-old.

Blades head coach Paul Heckingbottom this week confirmed that there had been interest in Berge’s signature going into the final week of the transfer window, with Liverpool and Chelsea said to be potentially circling with bids.

Eddie Howe’s side are now looking to throw their hat into the ring to give themselves an extra edge in midfield for the remainder of the season and beyond, although they want to pay less than the £22 million that United paid to Genk three years ago for Berge’s services.

The Verdict

A move for Berge would actually make a lot of sense from Newcastle’s point of view.

They do lack some depth in the middle of the park, and in brief glimpses when he was fit we have seen what Berge can do in the Premier League with Sheffield United.

For someone with his level of ability, Berge should really be dominating matches in the Championship, but for whatever reason he hasn’t been doing so.

Despite that, he’s still clearly got the ability to be a good Premier League player and clubs are recognising that – United’s current questionable financial status is seeing top flight clubs make a move and if they can get north of £20 million then it may be a case of having to cash in.
