According to The Times, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has emerged as one of the prime contenders to replace Steve Bruce as the next Newcastle United boss. The Magpies are yet to win a league game this term and their Saudi-backed takeover might result in a massive overhaul in the upcoming months.

The Gers, a resurgent force under Gerrard, ended Celtic’s supremacy by conquering the Scottish crown. The decade-long despair is finally over and his pulling power in the transfer market scripted the transition within a couple of years. Although they have not been able to emulate last season’s form, the legendary Liverpool midfielder has done enough to keep hold of the top spot in these early weeks.

Newcastle, meanwhile, have a three-man shortlist. Belgium boss Roberto Martinez and former Arsenal gaffer Unai Emery are also in contention alongside the Light Blues chief. Emery is currently in charge of Villarreal, whereas Martinez might also fancy a return to Premier League after facing dismissal at Everton.

Gerrard, on the other hand, grabbed the Rangers job back in the summer of 2018. He only had a brief managerial experience with Liverpool youths prior to his Ibrox switch, but the personality and charisma of one of England’s greatest ever footballers staged a swift turnaround north of the border.

Why Rangers Must Be Sweating Over Gerrard’s Future

Recently, he has played it coy when asked about the ongoing speculations over a potential move to St. James’ Park.

“I think it’s interesting, what’s happening at Newcastle. I think if anyone deserves a break it’s the Geordie fans. So I’m sure that excitement levels are very high down on the Toon. But from a personal point of view, I don’t really get involved in speculation. And I wish Steve Bruce all the best.”

Gerrard’s influence and reputation saw the likes of Scott Arfield, Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis and John Lundstram plying their trade in Scotland from Premier League on Bosman transfers. Also, he has roped in an array of promising youngsters during his Rangers realm and formed a balanced set-up of youthfulness as well as experience.

His current contract runs till 2024 and the manager, therefore, might opt for a fresh challenge elsewhere. He has attained the epitome of success with Rangers and the project at Tyneside is indeed fascinating due to the injection of enormous cash. It is to be seen now how it shapes up in the forthcoming future.
