Hats off to Sunderland.
They have left all other April Fools Day pranks trailing in their wake.
Newcastle United fans left speechless.
The audacity of Sunderland to do this, quite incredible.
To fool so many unsuspecting neutrals, well, what can you say?
Monday (April Fools Day) saw Sunderland attempting to follow up Friday’s 2-0 victory at Cardiff City.
The Mackems at home to Blackburn Rovers who are fighting relegation.
Sunderland losing 5-1 at home to the relegation strugglers (no, that scoreline isn’t the April Fool prank, it is true!).
No, the April Fool came when the official attendance at the Stadium of Light was announced as 42,019…
I was in the car driving around doing various jobs this afternoon and had Radio Newcastle’s match commentary and post-match analysis and phone-in on. Now honestly, this lot are hilarious, they are the most deluded in denial set-up I have ever heard, always insisting everything great and positive, no matter what the reality actually is.
Yet even they were admitting how woeful the mackems had been today AND Gary Bennett (the most deluded and in denial of all of them) admitted there was no more than 32,000 at today’s match, not over 42,000 as the club are claiming. If he is admitting 32,000, then you can probably knock off another 5k!
Bennett also had me struggling to drive in a straight line, when he declared that after today, Sunderland ‘can’t iron over the cracks’ anymore. Which could be one of the reasons why they have been so useless for months, if indeed they have been trying to ‘iron’ over those cracks.
I was also loving it when Gary Bennett and commentator Nick Barnes, after Sunderland pulled it back to 4-1 with 77 minutes on the clock, then went on a long crazy conversation discussing whether the Mackems could now ‘do a Newcastle’ and repeat their last 13 minutes turn around that saw NUFC win 4-3 against West Ham. This wild speculative conversation only halted four minutes later when Blackburn then made it 5-1!
I haven’t laughed so much since Sunderland fans started claiming the real number of fans inside their stadium (not what their club claims) was so low because so many of them were having to work night shift at Nissan. By the looks of today, Nissan must have taken on another 15,000 or so Sunderland fans in recent months…
